Service functions
The write operations: routines, resets, the clear flow and their confirmation contract.
Service functions can change the car. They include parking-brake service mode, calibration and resetting a service reminder. This guide lists the actions in Hanterill, the checks shown before each one and the limits of what the app can confirm.
These actions change the vehicle
Each action on this page needs its own confirmation. If the installed app does not support an action, it refuses to run it.
Reading and changing the car#
Ordinary scans ask the car for information. Service functions send a command that may move a part or change a stored setting. Hanterill does not use service functions to change configuration values, bypass a protected control unit or install vehicle software.
How confirmation works#
Before a service action runs, Hanterill shows the car, the affected control unit and the action. You must acknowledge the safety checks before you can continue. Only one service action runs at a time. The session record keeps the response from the car, because sending a command does not prove that it succeeded.
You are responsible for checking the conditions around the car. Park on level ground, apply the parking brake and follow any instruction about wheel chocks or support for the 12 V battery. The app cannot verify all physical conditions. Read the prerequisite shown for the specific action before confirming it.
Service and maintenance actions#
The actions below remain grouped by system. The risk level is Hanterill's guide, not a substitute for the car's service instructions.
Check support before running a routine
Some routines have limited verification on real cars. They can move parts or change settings. Check the support label beside the action, follow the car's service procedure and stop if the car does not confirm the result. A listed routine may still be refused by your car.
The electric parking brake service mode and usage-mode transitions are still beta. Neither has been confirmed end to end on a live car. Check the support label and caveat shown before each routine, and wait for your car to confirm the action before starting physical work.
| System | What it does | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Electric parking brake (beta) | Retract to service position for pad replacement | High |
| Electric parking brake (beta) | Restore from service position | Medium |
| Steering angle | Zero the steering-angle sensor | High |
| 12 V battery | Adaptation reset after a battery replacement | Medium |
| TCAM backup battery | Condition the telematics backup battery | Medium |
| Auxiliary coolant pump | Run pump 1, pump 2 or both (guided bleed) | Medium |
| ADAS camera | Reset the forward camera | Medium |
| ADAS radar | Reset the forward radar | Medium |
| Surround camera | Learn the surround-view cameras | Medium |
| Blind-spot radar | Reset the left/right blind-spot radars | Medium |
| Service reminder | Reset the service interval counter | Low |
| Climate control | Calibrate the HVAC damper | Low |
| Sunroof and windows | Normalise after a power loss | Low |
| Grille shutter | Calibrate the active grille shutter | Low |
| Usage mode (beta) | Put the car into an active usage mode | Medium |
| Usage mode (beta) | Put the car into an inactive usage mode | Medium |
Guided coolant bleed#
The coolant bleed guides you through the pump steps. You can select pump 1, pump 2 or both. If the app cannot confirm that a pump stopped, it says so. Check the car before continuing.
Clearing fault codes#
Fault-code clearing has its own confirmation and options. You can save the details attached to a code before clearing it and ask Hanterill to scan again afterward. An optional control-unit restart is available for codes that remain latched, but it does not run while the car reports a driving mode. See Fault codes for the steps.
Restarting a control unit#
You can restart one control unit as a separate action. The fault-code clearing flow can also offer a restart for a unit that keeps a code latched. Both require confirmation.
What can be reversed#
The parking brake has a restore action. You can reverse a usage-mode change and switch off the coolant pump. The other actions do not have a rollback button. A calibration or reset may need a separate service procedure if it does not produce the expected result.
Security-level protected routines#
Some routines are protected by a security level in the car's control unit, and a routine appearing in Hanterill does not mean every car will allow it. You can confirm an action and still receive a refusal from the car.
Hanterill can check whether a control unit reports its security level as locked or unlocked. This check does not unlock it, and Hanterill does not send an unlock key. If the car refuses a protected routine, the app shows the refusal instead of marking the action complete. Do not keep retrying a refused routine.
Limits and unexpected responses#
Hanterill's support labels tell you what has been observed. Follow the manufacturer's service procedure, especially for brakes, steering and driver-assistance systems. A vehicle marked Testing or Research may still show service actions, so check each action's support label. If Hanterill cannot identify the required control unit, it refuses the request.
Hanterill marks an action complete only when the control unit confirms it. A refusal, missing response or reply the app cannot interpret is not shown as success. Review the result before moving on.
