Hanterill is source-available for private, non-commercial use, under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). This page is the plain-language summary. The full legal code is authoritative. The repository's LICENSE.md file carries the notice and the link.

What this means

• The source code is published and can be read, audited and built.
• You may use, run and share Hanterill for any non-commercial purpose: personal diagnostics on vehicles you own or are authorised to work on, research, and education.
• You may share the project in its unmodified form, keeping attribution and the license notice intact.
• Commercial use is not permitted. That includes resale, paid support or diagnostics as a service, and use inside a business whose purpose is commercial advantage or monetary compensation.
• No derivatives may be distributed. You may make private modifications for your own non-commercial use, but you may not publish or share a modified version.
• It is not released under an OSI-approved open-source license. "Source-available" and "open source" are not the same thing. Creative Commons also does not recommend its licenses for software; the project uses this one deliberately.

Why source-available

The project publishes its code so that owners can verify exactly what Hanterill sends to a vehicle. Keeping it non-commercial and no-derivatives keeps the focus on that one tool rather than on a product or a field of forks.

Contributions

Contributions are accepted under the same license, and are incorporated into the project itself rather than distributed as separate derivatives. See Development for what helps most.
