The source

The repository is public and the source is readable, for private and non-commercial use under the project license. Packaged downloads come from the release page. Building from source is not a supported installation path yet.

Verifying a download

Releases are tagged in the repository and publish checksums alongside the binaries. Match the checksum of your download against the one listed on the release page before running it.

Release cadence

Versions follow SemVer tags. The panel shows the latest published release and its assets; if GitHub cannot be reached it links to the releases page.

What hardware you need

You need a passive ENET cable and an Ethernet port or USB Ethernet adapter. The cable runs from the car's OBD-II socket to RJ45; it contains no chip or driver.

What it costs

A cable costs a few tens of euros and a USB Ethernet adapter about the same, if your laptop has no port. There is no dongle to buy, no subscription to renew, and no account to create.

Works

  • A passive ENET cable: OBD-II on one end, RJ45 on the other. No chip, no firmware, no driver.
  • The built-in Ethernet port on a laptop, when it has one.
  • A USB-C or Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter from Apple, Belkin, Anker, UGREEN, Dell or Lenovo.
  • A USB-A Ethernet adapter with an ASIX AX88179 or Realtek RTL8153 chipset.

Does not work

  • ELM327 and other generic OBD-II dongles. They speak a serial protocol, not DoIP.
  • J2534 pass-through interfaces. They are for manufacturer flash tools, not for standard DoIP.
  • Any adapter that presents itself as a serial port rather than a network interface.
  • A router or switch between the laptop and the car.

The test is whether the adapter gives the operating system a real network interface. If it appears as a serial port, or if it terminates the link itself, Hanterill cannot reach the car through it.
